Let me explain: Ranger became matted after rolling around in some form of 'hitchhikers' or 'briars'. He was miserable and does not take to being brushed well at all. We reached out to Dr. Houssam Marseli about the situation and made arrangements to bring him the next morning to be sedated and shaved, as he had done it for Ranger before back in March. When I arrived he refused to take him and denied ever doing it before. He didn't even come out to face me and explain our options. I was shocked and extremely upset. On our way home I stopped at Dogwood Veterinary Hospital and explained the situation. They were very accommodating and took him in that very morning to be examined, sedated and shaved. Lily’s owner ♥️♥️♥️Connie L.Connie L. ★★★★★ I started using Dogwood primarily for my Boxer, Moose, over 3 years ago. Living more than an hour away, I found Dogwood and Dr Horsley on Google search. Moose needed help recovering from TPLO surgery on his 2nd back leg. He wasn’t bouncing back in his post surgical TPLO with his prior Orthopedic Doctor (not at Dogwood) as they did not offer Physical Therapy or laser therapy to help him in recovery. I called Dr. Horsley for a phone consultation and explained Moose’s very complex challenges and feared that she wouldn’t want to take on his case. To the contrary, she agreed. After a few months of laser therapy and the right medication protocol, Moose started walking, running and even jumping again. We had him almost back to his normal life for approximately 8-12 months post TPLO when he again started showing signs of weakness. He was Knuckling his left paw and showing signs of coordination issues when walking or running. That’s when Moose and I were approached by a very small and petite lady at Dogwood who’s an extremely passionate and a highly confident Physical Therapist named Cristina Barndoller. She said that Dr. Horsley brought her into consult on Moose’s case. Reluctantly we agreed to several physical therapy sessions with Cristina. She started working with Moose on building strength in his hips to offset weakness in his knees. For months, she used laser therapy with physical therapy as she worked hard to rebuild Moose’s strength. As the months continued we could see Moose’s progress, his muscle tone improved although, he continued to slowly decline. Concerned, Dr. Horsley suggested we do genetic testing to determine if Moose was a carrier of Degenerative Myelopathy, DM. This debilitating disease is very much like ALS disease in humans. October of 2022, it was confirmed, Moose carried both genetic markers and that he would be facing a very difficult road ahead. Typical duration of this disease in dogs can vary but 8-12 months estimate that Moose would lose his ability to run, walk or stand on his own. Cristina did not falter, never once giving up on her knowledge and abilities while keeping Moose strong and standing. As our monthly visits turned into weekly then bi-weekly visits, Cristina pressed on, never giving up hope although knowing we’d lose the fight. Cristina eventually helped keep Moose walking and standing for approximately 18 months post DM genetic confirmation. During the last 2 years working tirelessly, she became not only a trusted medical resource but more valuable, a friend and family member. Moose lost his battle to DM on Friday, May 24, 2024. Cristina, Dr Horsley and every member of their staff were present, wrote notes to Moose to wish him well in his new journey. Moose felt the love and passion every single time he was there. He was not scared. He was loved as much as he was loved by his parents.
